A well-built media wall should make the television, sound system and storage feel like one considered feature, not a collection of devices placed against a wall. Knowing how to hide cables in a media wall is what creates that clean, fitted appearance. It also makes the room easier to use, safer for children and simpler to maintain when equipment changes. The best results come from planning cable routes before the joinery is made. Retrofitting cables after a media wall has been fitted can be possible, but it often means compromises with visible trunking, limited access or a TV position that is higher than intended. A bespoke design allows every cable route, socket and access point to be considered around the exact equipment you use. Plan cable routes before building the media wall A media wall is not simply a decorative surround for a TV. Behind the finished panelling or cabinetry, it needs space for power, aerial feeds, internet connections, HDMI leads, speaker cables and, in some homes, fire or lighting controls. Each of these needs a sensible route from its source to the relevant device. Start by deciding what will sit within the wall. This may include a wall-mounted TV, soundbar, games console, Sky or Freesat box, streaming device, router, speakers and an electric fire. Equipment should not be selected as an afterthought. Its dimensions, ventilation requirements and cable connections all affect the joinery design. It is also worth thinking ahead. A TV may last for years, but HDMI standards, games consoles and set-top boxes change more often. Allowing for spare conduit or an accessible cable channel gives you options later without opening the wall. This small detail is one of the main differences between a media wall that looks good on installation day and one that remains practical over time. How to hide cables in a media wall safely The neatest approach is to run cables within purpose-made voids behind the wall finish. A joiner can create these voids inside the framework, with routes leading from the TV recess to lower cabinets or a discreet service area. Rather than having leads hanging beneath the screen, they are concealed inside the construction from the outset. Power cables require particular care. Mains electrical work should be planned and completed by a qualified electrician, with sockets positioned where they can be safely reached if needed. It is usually better to install sockets behind the TV and within the cabinet housing equipment than to rely on extension leads hidden in a tight space. Low-voltage cables, such as HDMI, aerial and network cables, should be kept separate from mains wiring where practical. This helps keep the installation orderly and can reduce the risk of interference. A suitably sized conduit is particularly useful for HDMI and network cables, as connectors can be bulky and cables may need replacing in future. Avoid burying loose cables directly behind fixed boards with no route for removal. It may look tidy initially, but it turns a straightforward equipment upgrade into a disruptive repair. Concealed does not need to mean permanently inaccessible. Use conduit for future-proofing Conduit is a protective tube installed within the media wall that allows cables to be pulled through after the wall is finished. It is one of the most useful additions to a bespoke installation, especially between the TV recess and the cabinet below. The conduit should be wide enough for the connectors you expect to use, not just the cable itself. Sharp bends should also be avoided, as these make it difficult to feed new cables through. Where a long route is necessary, access points can make future changes much easier. For a straightforward TV and soundbar setup, one well-planned conduit may be enough. For a more advanced system with several devices, wired internet, surround sound or multiple gaming consoles, separate routes can keep cable management more organised. Build access into the design A cable route only works properly if there is a way to reach it. This does not mean compromising the appearance of the media wall with obvious panels. Access can be incorporated discreetly through removable cabinet backs, lift-out shelves, hidden panels or service openings inside lower cupboards. The TV recess also needs consideration. If the television is mounted tightly within a framed opening, there must be enough room behind it for connections and for the bracket to operate. Some TV brackets allow the screen to pull forward, which can make connecting or replacing leads far easier. The recess should be sized around the specific TV model, including its cable positions, rather than the screen size alone. Cabinets beneath the television are often the best place for connected equipment. A set-top box, console or router can remain hidden behind doors while still being accessible. If remote controls need a direct signal, the design may need an open shelf, acoustic fabric, a suitable IR repeater or a discreetly ventilated door. The right solution depends on the equipment and how the household uses it. Do not overlook ventilation Hiding cables and devices should never mean trapping heat. Games consoles, amplifiers, routers and TV boxes generate warmth, and enclosed cabinetry can shorten their lifespan if airflow is restricted. Ventilation can be designed into a media wall without spoiling its finish. This may involve discreet slots, perforated sections, an open-backed cabinet area or a carefully planned gap behind equipment. The amount of ventilation required depends on what is being housed. An electric fire, for example, must be installed in line with the manufacturer's stated clearances and ventilation guidance. A bespoke joinery design should balance the visual finish with the practical needs of every component. A cabinet that looks beautifully minimal but overheats the equipment inside will become frustrating very quickly. Choose the right location for sockets and equipment The position of sockets has a major effect on how successfully cables can be concealed. Behind the TV, sockets should sit where plugs will not prevent the screen from sitting correctly on its bracket. At cabinet level, sockets need to remain reachable and should allow enough clearance for plugs, adaptors and cable bends. It can be tempting to place every device directly below the TV, but that is not always the best layout. In some rooms, locating the router or larger AV equipment in a side cabinet creates more space and keeps the central section less cluttered. This is particularly useful where the media wall also includes display shelving, closed storage or a fireplace feature. Wired internet is worth considering during planning, especially for gaming, streaming and smart TVs. A concealed network cable can offer a more dependable connection than relying entirely on Wi-Fi, while keeping the finished room free from visible leads. Match the cable plan to the style of the wall A slim feature wall with a mounted TV needs a different approach from a full-width fitted media wall with base units and shelving. In a shallow wall, space behind the screen may be limited, so cable routes and recessed sockets must be planned precisely. In a deeper cabinet-led design, there is more scope to create service voids and house equipment away from view. The wall construction also matters. Existing solid walls, stud partitions and chimney breasts each present different constraints. Chasing cables into an existing wall can involve more building work and may not be appropriate in every property. A purpose-built media wall in front of the existing surface can often provide a neater, more controlled route for wiring while allowing the original wall to remain largely untouched.
